Why Get Your Windows Cleaned in the Fall

Fall is a good time to clean windows in Toronto. Summer dirt is still on the glass, the weather still allows it and the light gets short soon.

Fall is a good time to clean windows because the dirt from the summer is still on the glass and winter will lock it in. Clean glass also lets in more of the low light we get from November to March.

What is on the glass by October

A summer of pollen, dust, bugs and spider webs builds up on the outside of the windows. Sprinkler spray leaves mineral spots. Rain does not wash any of it off. It only moves it around, as we explain in our guide on why windows look dirty after rain.

If you have a home with a lot of glass, such as a sunroom or a wall of windows, the fall clean is worth the most. Those rooms are where you notice dirty glass every day.

The weather is still on your side

We clean the glass with water. Once the temperature stays below freezing, water can freeze on the glass before it can be wiped. Fall gives us the dry, mild days that make the work go well. Waiting until spring means looking through winter grime for months.

Short days, grey light

From November the days in Toronto are short and often grey. Clean glass lets through more of what light there is. Many people notice the difference most in rooms that face north.

Frames and sills before the cold

Dead bugs, leaf bits and grit collect in the frames and on the sills. Left over winter, they get wet, freeze and sit there. Clearing them in the fall keeps them from staining the frame or ending up back on the glass.

Same visit as the gutters

The leaves that fill your gutters are the same ones that stick to the windows. Once most of them are down, it makes sense to do both in one visit, with one set of ladders and one trip to the house. If you only want one done, that is fine too.

Do you need a spring clean too

Some customers book one in spring as well, especially if pollen is heavy or the house faces a busy road. It is up to you. A fall clean is the one that sets up the winter.

What it looks like when it is done

We work on one window at a time, so nothing dries before it is wiped. Screens and tracks get a look when we reach them. For the outside you do not need to be home. For the inside glass, someone needs to let us in. If you are out, we send photos when we finish.

Most Toronto homes are $174 to $299 for windows, depending on the size of the home. You get a fixed price before we start.

What about screens

Window screens collect pollen and dust all summer too. If you take them off for the winter, a rinse before you store them keeps them from going back on dirty in the spring.
