Ants in your interlock pavers: what it actually means

Ant hills appearing between your interlock pavers are annoying, but they are also telling you something specific about the state of your driveway or patio. The ants are not the actual problem. They are taking advantage of one that already existed underneath the surface.

This guide covers why the ant hills show up exactly where they do, why spraying for ants does not fix it, and what actually stops them from coming back.

We see this constantly on driveways and walkways that have gone a few years without a wash, and the fix is almost always the same regardless of how bad the anthill looks on the surface.

Ants look for loose, dry, easily worked material to build a colony in, and a joint where the original sand has washed out or broken down is close to ideal for that. The space between and underneath the pavers gives them shelter, and the loose remaining sand is far easier to move than compacted soil elsewhere in your yard. That is why the hills consistently show up along the same joint lines rather than scattered randomly across the property, and why a driveway with fully packed joints almost never has the same problem.

If the sand in the joints were still packed hard and full, there would be nowhere for a colony to establish itself in the first place. The ants moving in is a downstream effect of the joints already having failed, the same underlying cause behind the weeds that tend to show up in the same driveways. Treat the joint and the ants generally lose their reason to be there, since the problem was never really about them to begin with.

A pesticide treatment might clear out the colony that is there today, but it does nothing about the open, loose joint that made the spot attractive in the first place. Without fixing the joint itself, a new colony or a different pest entirely can move into the exact same gap once the treatment wears off. It is the same pattern as pulling weeds without dealing with the sand underneath them, and it is why homeowners often tell us they have sprayed the same spot more than once with the ants simply coming back a season later.

Once the joints are pressure washed clean of old sand, dirt and any existing ant activity, then packed with fresh polymeric sand and misted to set hard, there is no loose material left for a colony to work with. The sand fills the joint solid and level, which removes both the shelter and the workable material that made the spot attractive to begin with, so a colony that was already there has to move somewhere else entirely rather than simply relocating within the same driveway.

Once the joints are locked down, ant activity in that area typically stops, along with the weeds and the stone shifting that tend to show up in the same failed joints. We knock or text when we arrive, then walk the area first before touching anything. Anything light still sitting on the surface we move clear, and put back before we leave. Then we wash between every crack and across the face of the stones, which blasts the anthill itself out along with the old sand and dirt sitting in the same joint, and we rinse the edges so nothing runs off onto a neighbour's yard in the process.

Once the surface is fully dry, new polymeric sand goes into every joint, packed full and level, then misted in light passes so it hardens in place. Before we leave, we walk the whole job with you again so you can see exactly what changed and ask anything you want about the process.

If ants are only showing up in one corner of a larger driveway or patio, it is tempting to think only that spot needs attention. In practice, if one section of joints has broken down enough to attract a colony, the rest of the surface is usually not far behind, since it was all sanded at the same time under the same conditions. Doing the whole area rather than a patch also avoids the newly sanded section looking noticeably different from the older joints right next to it.
