Polymeric sand is what holds your interlock together once it is packed into the joints and set with water. Done properly, it usually lasts 3 to 5 years before it needs to be redone, but that is a range, not a promise, because a lot happens to a driveway between the day we leave and the day the joints finally give out.

None of this is about picking a fancier product off a shelf. It comes down to how the joints were prepared before the sand went in, and how the surface gets treated in the years after.
Why it is a range and not a fixed number
Two identical driveways, sanded the same week by the same crew, can age differently depending on how they are used and where they sit. A driveway that only ever sees a sedan pulling in once a day wears very differently from one that takes a work truck every morning. A shaded backyard patio holds moisture longer than a south facing driveway that dries fast after rain. None of that is something we can control once the job is done, which is why we always give a range instead of a guarantee down to the year, and why we would rather be honest about that range than promise a specific number we cannot actually control.
What actually shortens the life of the sand
A handful of things consistently wear the joints down faster than average.
- Heavy vehicle or foot traffic, especially on driveways used daily by more than one car
- Harsh winters, since freeze and thaw cycles put real stress on packed joints
- Joints that were wet when the sand went in, which is the single biggest cause of early failure and exactly why we never rush the drying step
- Skipping the yearly wash, which lets organic matter and grit build back up in the joints and speeds up breakdown
The yearly wash that stretches it out
A pressure wash of the surface about once a year is the single easiest thing you can do to make polymeric sand last toward the longer end of that 3 to 5 year range. It clears organic matter and grit out before it has a chance to work its way into the joints and undermine the sand from above. It also keeps the colour looking fresh, which is a nice side effect of what is really a maintenance step, not a cosmetic one, and it takes far less time than a full wash and resand once the joints are already in good shape.

Signs the sand has failed
A few signs tell you the joints are done, not just dirty.
- Weeds growing between the pavers again
- Gaps or sunken joints where the sand has visibly dropped below the paver surface
- Stones that shift or wobble underfoot
- Ant hills showing up in the cracks
- Sand washing out visibly after a heavy rain
What our guarantee actually covers
The sanding carries a seasonal guarantee. Weather plays a real part in how the joints hold, and it is usually good for 3 to 5 years as covered above. If weeds start coming through earlier than that, text a photo to our line and we come take a look and touch it up at no charge. Anything else about the workmanship, tell us within 48 hours of the job and we come back and make it right.

What we do differently that actually helps it hold
How long polymeric sand lasts has as much to do with how it went in as what happens to it afterward. We pressure wash between every crack and across the face of the stones before any new sand goes in, so nothing old or organic is trapped underneath it working against the bond from day one. We never pack sand into joints that are not fully dry, since that single shortcut is the most common reason a resand fails early somewhere else.
Once the new sand is packed full and level, we blow off every bit of loose material from the surface before misting it in, so nothing hazes or bonds onto the stones themselves. The water goes in light passes rather than a flood, which is what lets the sand harden properly instead of washing back out of the joint before it sets. Each of those steps exists specifically to put your joints toward the longer end of the 3 to 5 year range rather than the shorter one, and none of them are steps we skip to save time on a job.
