Oil stains on your driveway, and what pressure washing actually gets out

Not every oil mark comes all the way out. Here is what we can lift, what usually just lightens, and why we tell you straight before we start.

Oil stains are one of the more common questions we get about a driveway, right up there with weeds and sunken joints, and the honest answer depends entirely on the stain in front of us. Some lift completely once the dirt and buildup around them are gone, disappearing along with everything else in that layer of grime. Others have soaked deep enough into the concrete that a wash brings them lighter without ever fully disappearing, and we would rather tell you that upfront than let you find out after the fact.

What pressure washing actually removes

Pressure washing takes off years of dirt, mildew, algae, oxidation and oil that a garden hose on its own cannot touch, and brings the surface of a driveway back close to its original colour. Surface level oil, the kind sitting on top of the concrete from a recent drip, a parked vehicle, or a light stain that has not had years to set in, usually comes off along with everything else in that same layer of built up grime. Most of what people notice on a driveway, the grey dullness and the darker patches, falls into this category and comes up in the same visit.

Why some oil stains do not fully disappear

Concrete is porous, which means it does not just sit on the surface the way dirt does, it actually absorbs into the material over time. Oil that has had months or years to work its way down into that surface can leave colour behind even after the wash lifts everything around it clean. Deep oil is one of a short list of stains we are upfront about before we ever start a job, alongside things like rust, tannin from leaves and trees, efflorescence, paint transfer, and etching from de icing salt or acid. None of those are a reflection on the wash itself, they are simply stains that have gone past what a surface clean can pull back out.

How to tell which kind of stain you are dealing with

A stain that still feels slightly raised or a little greasy to the touch is usually newer, and that kind is far more likely to come out completely once the surrounding dirt is gone. One that has gone flat, dark and dry into the concrete has usually been sitting for a season or longer, and that is the kind that tends to only lighten rather than disappear. Either way, we would rather look at it in person or from a clear photo than guess over the phone, since the honest answer really does depend on the specific spot.

What we do before we ever touch a stain

Send us a photo of the area and we will tell you straight what we think will happen before anything starts. Pressure and method are matched to the surface every time, so a driveway gets a different approach than siding or a wood deck, which our guide on pressure washing versus soft washing covers in more detail. We are not in the business of overselling a wash we do not think will get the result you are picturing.

Why cleaning the rest of the driveway can make an old stain stand out more

Cleaning shows what was already there. Once the dirt and grime around an old oil stain is gone, that stain can look more obvious by contrast, even though nothing about it has actually changed in the process. It is not a sign the wash made things worse, it is simply the rest of the driveway finally looking the way it is supposed to, which makes the one spot that did not fully lift stand out more than it did when everything around it was equally dirty.

Getting ready before we arrive

Leave the outside tap on so we have water to work with, move cars off the driveway, and clear anything light sitting on the surface like planters or toys. Our guide on how to prepare for pressure washing day covers the full list, and none of it takes more than about ten minutes to get through before we show up.

What happens once the wash is done

We walk the whole driveway with you before we leave, and if a stain has only lightened rather than disappeared completely, we tell you plainly rather than let you notice it later and wonder what happened. Nothing gets cleaned at a pressure it cannot take, which is part of why the process is careful rather than just blasting the whole surface at full strength. Our guide on whether pressure washing damages pavers goes into how we make that call surface by surface.

Getting a quote on a stained driveway

Every quote is free, and the price is fixed for the scope on the quote before we start, regardless of whether there is one stubborn stain or the whole driveway needs attention. Send a photo of the stained area along with the rest of the driveway and we will measure it out and get you a real number, not a guess over the phone. If the stain is the kind we think will only lighten, you will know that before you book anything, not after. We measure the area in square metres and price it off that, so what you are quoted is tied to the actual size and condition of your driveway rather than a flat rate that ignores what is really going on with it.

What if you are not sure it is worth doing

If you have looked at the stain for a while and are not sure a wash is even worth it, sending a photo costs nothing and gets you a straight answer either way. We would rather tell you honestly that a spot will likely only lighten than have you book a full driveway wash expecting a result we do not think we can deliver on that one area.

FAQ

You Got Questions.
We Have Answers.

Will pressure washing remove oil stains from my driveway?

It removes surface level oil along with the dirt and grime around it. If oil has soaked deep into the concrete, the wash usually lightens that spot rather than removing it completely.

How can I tell if my stain will come out?

A stain that still feels slightly greasy or sits on top of the surface is more likely to lift. One that has gone flat and dark into the concrete has usually been there longer and may only lighten.

Do you use chemicals to strip oil stains?

Pressure and method are matched to the surface, and we keep cleaning solution off your plants and grass. Send us a photo of the stain and we will tell you straight what we can do before we start.

Why does an old stain look more obvious after the driveway is washed?

Cleaning shows what was already there. Once the dirt around an old stain is gone, that stain can look more visible by contrast, even though nothing about it has changed.

What if the stain does not come out?

We tell you straight at the quote stage if a stain looks like it will only lighten. Nothing about that changes the price for the rest of the driveway.
